Uploading/overlaying a route (track) onto the map
I think being able to upload and overlay a potential route onto the member locations map would be a good feature enabling users to see how many hosts and who those hosts are are along their route. It would make looking for hosts that much easier and could help those unsure of their route recalibrate if they wish to.
I have not logged in for a long, long time and much to my detriment I imagine :o) I have never hosted (no requests!) or been hosted through warmshowers.org though I have searched and broswed occasionally when away on two wheels. Even so, this a feature I would love to be able to use. I use bikeroutetoaster.com to plot potential routes, to push them over here onto the map would be great.
I see you are using Drupal, I have some experience with Drupal and have been looking into mapping with Drupal a fair bit recently. I would like to help out it if you need any support...

route overlay
This would be a neat feature, although I don't know how it would best be shown. Were you thinking it would calculate hosts' distance from the route and make hosting suggestions?
Just tonight I had logged in to try to find a way to do something similar. My solution was copying the list of hosts from my state into a spreadsheet, doing a little bit of batch formatting, and was able to successfully save this as a gpx file consisting of a few hundred waypoints.
With Mapsource (I use Garmin GPSs), I can now overlay my potential bike routes with these waypoints and get an idea of who is close to my routes.
I think a feature to download a gpx of waypoints of host locations in a click would be a great feature!
Well my original thought was
Well my original thought was just to upload your route and have it overlayed onto the Hosts Map so you can easily visualise where hosts are located in relation to where you are thinking of riding...I often tweak my route according to hosts locations if they are sparse in a particular area.
This should be easily implemented and would not have to be limited to gpx files (I use bikeroutetoaster to prospect routes and use gpx). Upload, parse and output the track.
Are custom or contrib modules being used? I'm happy to get involved...the above should be simple enough.
A user route/track sharing dimension would be a nice addition to the community aspect of the site, have not seen any mention of tracks anywhere though so there not might be a demand for it.
I like the idea of hosting suggestions, unsure how to best implement this off the top of my head though.
Outputting hosts selected by criteria (State for your example) as a downloadable gpx would be pretty simple to implement as well...
Who are the developers round here, do you know? I have a pending application for the developers GoogleGroup listed in the Features forum, though have had no response yet.

Are you ready to write a module?
This site uses dozens of contrib and custom modules.... The map and its integration with Drupal is completely custom. If you're a php developer and want to work together to come up with something like this that would be fun!
Sorry for the late reply, I
Sorry for the late reply, I was on my bike :o)
I would love to put this together, where can I get hold of the relevant modules?
Is there a particular reason why the mapping intergration is completely custom?
I should be settled until April now so feel free to expect replies a lot more promptly.
Do you already know some
Do you already know some Drupal? Or willing to learn? It will take quite a bit of effort to get you set up. But if you want to give it a try contact me on the contact form.
Thanks,

Drupal
We are learning Drupal and would be interested in helping. We don't want to cause any trouble while we are getting up to speed, but would like to know what modules are in use and be kept in the development loop. Is there a way to do this?
Not much is happening right now
Right now we're not doing a lot, although I may rewrite the search facility and Chris is planning to rework the registration workflow. If you get eager about doing PHP development let me know and there may be a place.
Thanks!

Uploading/overlaying a route (track) onto the map
Not that I am of any use whatsoever, but I was also looking for something like this. In the "old days", trip software used to be able to give you specific categories of waypoints within a specified distance of the route between two points. Something similar that could give me a bike-legal route and show hosts within a specified distance of the route would be incredible! I know that GoogleMaps' bike routing is one step short of useless (distances 25% higher than by car as a rule), so I freely admit that I am dreaming here, but it WOULD be nice ;-). As long as I AM dreaming, I might as well ask for a means of adding host data as a layer on a Google map...

Google Maps
If you do add more mapping capabilities, Google Maps bike routes are nice, but OpenStreetMaps is a much better choice. It's user-editable, and much more widely used throughout Europe for cycling. Open.Mapquest.com now supports bike routing through OSM too.

Looking forward to seeing one for Android systems....
Default location for map
When you click on map to search for hosts, what determines where it loads by default? I would love for it either to use my IP to focus on my local area or to be able to enter a default place in my settings.
On the website, it's either your last view or your IP address
If you're talking about the website, it figures out your location by IP address the first time, but after that it remembers based on where you were browsing the last time you were logged in.
