London to Copenhagen
Hi all,
Just wanted to let you know about my current trip, which is taking me from London to Copenhagen via northern France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. I started off just a few days ago in London, fought my way across the hills of Kent (they are vicious!), and ended up in Bruges today.
Given that I haven't really been on a bike for over 8 years, and haven't ever carried massive amounts of luggage (relatively speaking - it's still only 12kg or so), I think I'm not doing too bad. It's exhausting, but very rewarding so far. I've been camping over the last few nights, but thought I'd hang out in Bruges a little longer and see the city, as it's so beautiful and pleasant to live in.
Off to Antwerp tomorrow, probably only getting there Friday (I know, I'm slow). Hoping to make it to Denmark in one piece by the end of this month, which is probably longer than I might need, but uphill riding is currently killing me, and I'm sure there'll be more hills to come!
I should really buy a map...

Hi Wadi,
Depending non the route you plan to take, the good news is that the Netherlands are very flat as well as the western part of Germany. I went through the Netherlands about 2 years ago. Did not have much of a map either, only an idea of where I am suppose to go. Asked directions as I went along. The people were very friendly and helpful to point me in the right direction. Their bicycle paths are also very well marked. The nice thing about cycle touring is not how fast you get there, but having fun getting there. Does sound like a great trip. Keep cycling and soon the hills will be nothing.
Thanks! Made it to Copenhagen
Thanks! Made it to Copenhagen last Tuesday (after roughly 12 days on the road), and have been hanging out with friends since. Had some good fun on the road, including a roughly two-hour adventure getting out of Gent (kept getting lost), and trying hard to escape the rain and strong winds of the past couple of weeks.
My only real problems in the end were constantly breaking spokes (too much weight, too many kilometers), and sometimes finding a place to sleep. Stealth camping is easier when you don't have to hide a bike as well as yourself...
I got so much faster towards the end, it was scary. I'm not a sightseer, so I rarely stopped off anywhere just to hang out and see a place, and when I felt up to it, I just kept cycling until pretty late. I had a number of 140km days, and felt none the worse for it.
I'm now preparing to head off to eastern Germany to visit the folks, taking the ferry to Poland and then cycling down that way; not too much of a challenge, but then I do need to bring this frolicking around Europe to an end and return to normal life.
What I can say, though: cycle tours are fun, and these 1400km were certainly not my last.
