Safe bike route from Jacksonville, Fl. Amtrak station to ACA Atlantic Coast Route (A1A)
Soumis par Anonymous le jeu, 2009-12-24 10:14
I will be taking Amtrak from Wash.,D.C. to Jacksonville, Fl. next month to begin a three week tour through Fl. I will literally begin the trip from the Amtrak station on Clifford Lane. Does anyone know of a relatively safe way to head east to the A1A (ACA Atlantic Coast Route)? Appreciate any input! I am a Warmshowers member too!

Florida roads
I've heard that a lot of Florida raods don't have much of a shoulder.
I think the reason is that they have to build up the road bed to get it above water leveles. A lot of Florida is flat and wet.
So they only build it up enough for the cars. I hope you find a good route.

90 has shoulders from at least Greenville or Madison to Montecello and the mostlly to Tallahassee. Are you camping? I have some 'woods' 2 miles before Greenville a half mile off 90 if you like real dark quiet woods. Two old trailors there. Montecello is very pretty and one of the most 1940's type town in Florida. Some BandB's lots of small shops downtown on weekends. Good restaurant half mile west of courthouse on 90. Stop at the BandB for more info. or call me.
Jax EAST
Sorry I did't notice you're going east (north Florida is quieter and lots of springs and clear rivers). But Jax Beach/Neptune beach are good neighborhood biking. Ocala forest has beautiful woods and Gainesville has a long rail trail. Otherwise AiA may be real busy but i haven't lived there since 1991 but assume it is busier now..
